Chapter Twenty-Two
Dana
Jacksonâs body tenses up next me as I squeeze him tight and whisper in his ear, âI got this.â
His eyes shoot lasers in Tyroneâs direction as he growls in my ear. âFine. But Iâm not going anywhere.â He lifts my bandaged hand and places a soft kiss on it in full view of Tyrone, his message obvious, and I love the way that simple gesture makes me feel. I may have to face the demon from my past, but Jackson has my back. Itâs a feeling Iâve never had before. Even my family is still mesmerized by Tyrone.
Tyroneâs spell on me, however, burned off long ago. I push up from the small couch and cross the room to a still-fuming Tyrone.
âNot exactly the reunion you pictured, huh?â I canât resist but to twist the knife. âWhy are you still here?â
He turns his back to Jackson, forcing me to walk around him. He runs his hands through his hair as his tongue taps his upper lip. Itâs a nervous tell that heâs never gotten over. âCan we go out to the porch and chat?â His voice is low, and he glances over his shoulder quickly, his intention clear: he wants to get far away from Jackson.
I already know if we step out the door, Jackson will follow. âWhatever you have to say, you can say right here, Tyrone. Exactly how long does it take to say adios?â
âYou just wonât cut a brother a break, will you?â Itâs a rhetorical question, but itâs laced with history. âFine.â He reaches into his pockets and he pulls his hands out dramatically. âI canât locate my car keys.â
I cross my arms and tilt my head to the side. âReally, Ty? Thatâs how youâre going to play it?â
He takes a long sigh and pats his jacket pockets. âIâm serious, D. They mustâve fallen outâ¦â
I hold up my hand. âDid you check back by the lake?â If I wasnât so concerned with him being stuck here, Iâd take a moment to take a bow for hitting him so hard that his keys disappeared. âGet back down there before the sun sets.â
âWhat do you think Iâve been doing sinceâ¦â He doesnât complete the sentence as the thought of what I did to him causes him to pause. âI checked the trail we followed as well.â
âI donât believe this,â I say and throw up my hands. The movement causes Jackson to push up from the couch across the room. I raise a hand to stop my protector. âWell, I hate to be that person, but I think youâve had a big part in doing it to me, and I donât trust you. Care to empty your pockets? All of them.â
âBabe, donât be like that.â
âDonât you dare call me that. Iâm not your babe.â I point to a small table.
âSo, this is where we are now?â he argues and begins emptying his pockets. Wallet, change, a peppermint, and his phone. He twirls and lifts the back of his jacket to show me his back pockets are empty.
